Opportunities for At-Risk, Special Needs Students

Voyager welcomes so-called “at risk” and “special needs” children. The philosophy of Voyager emphasizes that all children can learn and achieve high expectations, that all children are both gifted and have special needs and that a diverse range of children can be served in the general program of Voyager. In cases where special assistance is needed, a major aim of that assistance will be to re-integrate the student in the regular program of the school.

Voyager strives for for diversity and balance. It is not a school for “rich kids” or for “poor kids. It is not a school for “smart kids” or for “special education” kids. It is not a school for “locals,” or for “immigrants,” or for any particular group. It is a school for all children whose parents recognize the powerful potential of the principle of unity in diversity. Just as our state is enriched and strengthened by the fact that no racial or ethnic group has a numerical majority, likewise Voyager seeks an enrollment pattern where no particular category of student dominates numerically.

If student applicants have an open IEP (individualized Education Plan), Voyager staff members will meet with the family and members of the student’s home-school. Acceptance will be based on the decision of the team, subject to Voyager School having adequate resources to meet the child’s educational needs.
